Title: Diversity at Hawthorne
Date: September 30, 2014
Description: This picture shows a display case located near the front entrance of Hawthorne Education Center. If you look close you can see many different objects that have been donated by students which were added to the display. I think it very accurately illustrates the amount of diversity that is present at Hawthorne Education Center. There are many different notes of currency, cultural icons, and art pieces that have come from all corners of the globe. I took this picture while participating in Hawthorne’s orientation for new volunteers.
Title: The Team!!!
Date: October 8, 2014
Description: This was taken during one of our first meetings as the UMR Hawthorne Team. As one of the first meetings we had a lot of planning to do but we were able to accomplish quite a bit. It was during this meeting that we all started to get to know each other better and become more united as a team.
Title: Day 1.
Date: October 14th, 2014
This was our first day as volunteers at Hawthorne Education Center. After getting all of the new laptops set up, we were able to help each student log onto their Gmail accounts. This was the base of the rest of our project. We then gave the students a career research project assignment that they would be working on for the six weeks we were there. This day was very overwhelming for the students, but we were able to give them the satisfaction that they would have plenty of time to complete the project.
Title: Computer focused:
Date: October 14, 2014
The laptops were the most important component we used. Whether it was showing the students how to share on Google Docs or showing them how to make a slideshow, it was the focus of our lesson plan every week. We would have never had access to these laptops if it weren’t for the grant writing team in past years. These laptops were produced by IBM and used by students of all ages. They were open and ready to go before class started so that we could use our class time efficiently.
Title: Diversity Panorama:
Date: October 21, 2014
This panorama truly shows how diverse our class was. There were people from many different cultures and different ages. The classroom was an average size and was arranged nicely so that we could walk behind them to see if they were having computer issues.
Title: Teacher Role
Date: October 27, 2014
Description: This is a picture of Katlyn Kay presenting the powerpoint to the class at Hawthorne. This presentation featured descriptions and pictures of how to make and resolve comments on Google Docs. After the material was presented, the students edited other students’ documents to get a better feel for Google Docs.
Title: Teaching Team
Date: October 27, 2014
Description: This picture shows the group who taught on Monday afternoons. This group consisted of Kevin, Katlyn, Tom, and Chris. Each presentation was made the week before we were going to present at Hawthorne. The Monday afternoon group had two hours to present their material, while the Tuesday morning group had only an hour to present. Each group had to adjust to their allotted time but it worked out well in the end.
Title: Thank You
Date: November 18, 2014
On the last day of class, we received a thank you card from the teacher, Jennifer. The students had taken the time to write notes for us and they were all very positive. Many of the comments were thanking us for teaching them our knowledge.
