Our Goal
Thoughts About Diversity
Our goal is to teach the students at Hawothorne computer literacy. The skills that they learn can help prepare them for future classes at the high school level or higher.
The Hawthorne Education Center is an alternative education path for people who are 16 and older. The students can take classes to prepare them for getting a high school diploma or GED. By teaming up with RCTC and Winona, Hawthorne offers a wide range of classes for its students to take. The student population is very diverse and range from local residents to immigrants. The school also offers child care and health care for its students.
Community Collaboratory is a CLI class offered at The University of Minnesota Rochester. It is a way for the school to give back to the community by volunteering for different organizations in Rochester. The organization that we worked with was Hawthorne Education Center.
The community at Hawthorne was very diverse, therefore we needed to adjust how we responded to diversity in order to better serve that community. Cultural humility is another concept that is seen in this project. Part of this stems from the socioeconomic differences that students at Hawthorne have and how it is diverse in that sense as well. In addition, there are cultural and racial differences that can be seen in Hawthorne. The idea was that by being able to have cultural humility, we are not just aware by the fact that there are socioeconomic differences, but that we are reflecting on what we have found and having some introspection. In the end, we were able to learn lifelong lessons and we were able create mutually beneficial relationships.
